1.
ASSEMBLY
- Assemblies for Forms 4 and 5 will take place once a week. Students, with
Form Teachers present please, should report to the Auditorium or Drama Space
at 8.35 am, after registration. Details of the days will come later.
Assembly for 6th Form will take place in the Auditorium on Monday
(8:20 PROMPT). You must enter the Auditorium promptly and sit in the
assigned form places.
2.
When
students arrive in school they should NOT then leave the school premises
either to go to the local shops or out into Xochitl where the cars are
parked. (Detentions will be given for offenders). Students parking in
Xochitl and entering school by the door near the Biology Lab. should
NOT leave again via this exit before the start of school. Students
arriving by bus in the main parking area should enter school by the Primary
School entrance.
N.B.:
Students should NOT loiter in this area and should NOT smoke near (eg: at
the near by shops OR the car parking area in Xochitl) the school.
WARNING
- any abuse of the 'pass system' will lead to a suspension of this
privilege. NOTES are essential from parents giving their authorisation for
this. Students in the 6th Form will be advised by letter when the
system is ready to start. Students in the Upper 6th who have NOT
completed the ICT programme required for all graduates in the Upper 6 will
NOT be eligible for the pass system NOR for a designated time will students
in U6th with poor attendance record be eligible. Students who fail to meet
first draft deadlines might also lose this privilege.
3.
CARS
- If students drive their own cars to school they should park as close to
the school as possible in Xochitl street in the lots already marked and NOT
use the staff car park. They should provide their Form Teacher with their
licence plate numbers (these should be passed on to Mr. Hill), the days the
cars are used and a note from parents for students over 16 years giving
permission for this. Under 16 (students in Form 4) are not allowed to drive
cars to school. Try NOT to annoy the people living near the school and any
car accident/collision near the school MUST be reported to JH.
4.
PUNCTUALITY
- Students must be punctual to school - they will be marked late if arriving
in the registration room after 8.25 am - (too many lates, more than 5 per
month, will result in a detention). Students arriving late (after 8.30)
MUST sign the LATE BOOK. The LATE BOOK is located inside the MAIN
ENTRANCE. Failure to do so will result in the student being marked absent
for the day. This has caused major problems for Sixth Formers in the past
and their failure to obtain a Greengates Diploma. Detention or even
suspensions from school may result for habitual latecomers.
5.
ABSENCE
- Absence notes MUST be brought to school within 3 days of returning to
school. (MEDICAL NOTES - especially Sixth Form students should be
given/sent to Mr. Hill).
WARNING- 6TH Form students
should TRY not TO exceed 9 unjustified ABSENCES PER year. Too
many may result in failure to obtain a Greengates Diploma AND MAY LEAD TO
STUDENTS BEING DENIED ENTRANCE TO THE FULL DIPLOMA PROGRAMME (details
later).
It is
expected that students must find out all work missed through absence and
that they catch up with this work as soon as possible. The initiative for
this MUST come from the students on examination courses.
6.
DRESS CODE - There is no uniform but we still expect
sensible dress - torn jeans, shorts or cut offs etc. are NOT
acceptable neither are bermuda shorts or singlets for either sexes. very
short skirts, bare mid-drifts, low cut or scantily cut tops are not
acceptable. SENSIBLE SHOES SHOULD ALSO BE WORN ON DAYS WHERE STUDENTS ARE
DOING PRACTICAL WORK IN THE LABORATORIES. form and subject teachers will
report students who break this basic ‘dress code’ to jh – students WHO
AFTER A WARNING FAIL TO ADHERE TO THIS WILL BE SENT HOME TO CHANGE. Form
Teachers will report students who fail to follow this to Mr. Hill
7.
MOVEMENT
around the school and the senior block - keep to the RIGHT in the senior
block corridors and on the stairs, queue up in single file against the
wall. Try NOT to stop for a chat or spend too much time in bathrooms
between classes. You must be in class with equipment ready within 5 minutes
of the last lesson and after break. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday
you must be in class by 12.00 pm, on Thursday at 12:40 pm. Persistent
lateness will result in sanctions against students from their subject
teachers and detentions from JH for this.
8.
LITTER
- avoid
dropping litter around the school - use rubbish bins provided - set a good
example to younger students (6TH FORM ONLY - should keep their
common room/study room tidy and litter free.) Dispose of your litter in the
BIN. The use of the field, basketball court, picnic area or bleachers
WILL BE LOST if litter is not collected.
9.
TUCK
SHOP
- Forms 4 and 5 MUST only use the tuck shop at break and after 2:35 pm.
Detentions will be given for those buying food/drinks outside these times.
Form orderly queues for drinks/food; do not buy food for others; only
purchase up to 5 items. MOVE away from the area when you finish purchasing
and DISPOSE OF YOUR RUBBISH! Coffee will be available again this year for
forms 4-U6th.
N.B.:
6th Form students may use the tuck shop when free but you are
advised against using the tuck shop between classes. Forms 4 & 5 MUST
NOT use the tuckshop except at break and at 2.35 if staying in the
afternoon. Sixth Form students MUST NOT hang around the tuck shop area or
outside the Library and, of course, NO food or drink should be taken into
the Library.
THE
TUCK SHOP WILL BE CLOSED EACH DAY BETWEEN 2:25 - 2:35 PM
10.
AFTER
SCHOOL ON CAMPUS
- To all Form 4 and Upper 6 students - do NOT stay behind in school after
2.30 pm unless you are registered for an afternoon activity. If you are
registered for any activities i.e. CAS, Mexican Geography etc. then you must
attend class. Sanctions will be taken against those failing to attend if
present in school. Students staying in the afternoons MUST be registered
and must sign up officially for these programmes – failure to do so will
result in suspension from these activities. Reports will be issued this year
for these activities (UNAM) in Form 5 and 6th Form. FAILURE TO
ATTEND UNAM CLASSES OR TO COMPLETE THE WORK WILL ALSO LEAD TO MAJOR PROBLEMS
AND COULD RESULT IN SPECIAL EXAMINATIONS INSTEAD.
11.
Take
great CARE over personal possessions – all students this year will be
assigned a LOCKER.
LOCKERS
are essential to avoid carrying around excessive weight. Use lockers
sensibly at 8.15, 11.15 and 2.30, to off load books or to collect your
books. NB: Any student caught defacing or vandalising lockers will face
serious consequences.
12.
MOBILE PHONES / IPODS -
Mobile phones and
IPODS may be brought to school BUT ONLY FOR USE BEFORE 8.20 AM , BREAK
TIME & AFTER 2.30 PM. If seen in use during the school day , other than
at these times, items of equipment may be confiscated by members of staff
and handed in to KH/JH to keep for 24 hours and further sanctions will
follow for repeated offenders.
To minimise interference with
work and concentration ALL students Forms 1 – U6 should not use mobile
phones (ALL PHONES MUST BE SWITCHED OFF AT THESE TIMES) or CD players/IPODS:
A)
in class
B)
when moving between class
C)
when working in the Library
Students without mobile phones will be able to use the telephone, with
permission, in the school office.
Students
are reminded that valuables brought to school are AT THE OWNER’S RISK and
that they should keep them, when not in use, in their bags or their
lockers. Such items, of course, should always be clearly labelled with the
students name and form (and this includes IPODS which, because of their cost
students are advised against bringing to school.).
·
LOST
PROPERTY
– students either losing or finding items around the school should go to the
PTA room and, if failing to find missing item, to Mr. Hill.
NEVER
LEAVE VALUABLES UNATTENDED AROUND THE SCHOOL.
AVOID bringing excessive amounts of money to school and try to take cheques
(for school fees) to the office during registration. Students who lose
property must report this as soon as possible to Mr. Hill.
13.
Avoid using bad language
at any time in school OR ON BUSES, SCHOOL TRIPS AND EVENTS.
This is viewed very seriously, as is any damage or graffiti to school
property. Student(s) concerned may be suspended for this.
14.
Try to
set a good example to younger students at all times in school and out
of school i.e. on the school bus. Form 4 to Upper 6 students must set a good
example to younger students on the school buses. Try to assist monitors,
bus drivers and school ‘nanas’. the use of foul language on buses, as
indeed on school premises will be regarded very seriously.
15.
NB: ANY
STUDENTS INTRODUCING DRUGS INTO THE SCHOOL INCLUDING ALCOHOL WILL BE
EXPELLED.
16.
NB:
ANY STUDENT CAUGHT SMOKING INSIDE SCHOOL, WITHIN SIGHT OF THE SCHOOL
OR NEAR THE SCHOOL WILL BE SUSPENDED.
NB:
THESE RULES ALSO APPLY TO THE BUSES, SCHOOL SPONSORED FIXTURES AND EVENTS,
THE NEIGHBOURHOOD NEAR THE SCHOOL AND WHERE IT IS FELT THAT THERE IS
‘REASONABLE SUSPICION’ THAT DRUGS, INCLUDING ALCOHOL, ARE BEING USED BY A
STUDENT IN SCHOOL, THEN THE SCHOOL RESERVES THE RIGHT, AFTER CONSULTATION
WITH PARENTS, TO INSIST ON AN IMMEDIATE ‘DRUG TEST’ BEING TAKEN. THE
STUDENT CONCERNED MAY BE SUSPENDED FROM SCHOOL UNTIL THE RESULTS ARE KNOWN.
17.
NB:
Any student caught skipping school or classes will be suspended or be given
a detention. Attendance will be checked on a regular basis by teachers,
especially in the 6th Form. Registers will be kept by ALL IB
teachers. STUDENTS WITH PERSONAL PROBLEMS WHO WISH TO SEE A COUNSELLOR IN
LESSON TIME, MUST FIRST REPORT TO THE SUBJECT TEACHER AND MUST RETURN TO
CLASS AFTER, WITH A PINK SLIP (ALL WORK MISSED BECAUSE OF THIS MUST BE
CAUGHT UP).
18.
LIBRARY
- Observe the Library rules - no use of IPODS or mobile phones, no talking
(SILENCE is essential for genuine work) books checked out properly.
Offenders may face a library suspension. This year again a Library security
system will be in place - so do NOT try to take out books without
authorisation. And make sure please that all library books/fines are
returned/paid. All students must be respectful to ALL Library staff and are
advised to be cooperative.
19.
FREE
CLASSES
- 6TH FORM STUDENTS WHEN FREE should go to the LIBRARY or COMMON
ROOM and NOT 'hang around' outside the Senior Block/Tuck Shop, or on the
school field or bottom yard.
20.
P.E.
- If you have a genuine excuse in writing from your parents excusing you
from PE you must report to the PE teachers in the Gym. Special regulations
covering 6th Form PE (TOK & CAS) will be issued separately.
Failure to attend PE in the 6th Form may result in problems with
obtaining the full Greengates’ Graduation Diploma. Only students authorised
by PK, DS and GM for CAS or TOK may miss PE and these students must be
placed on special lists sent to the PE department.
The P.E. Department will issue
another directive on checking students’ P.E. kit.
21.
NO ball
games
are permitted on the field or on the bottom yard during class time without
some teacher supervision. The PE department will not hand out balls
without permission from KH/JH.
22.
The
current Student Council will continue in office until such time where
a decision will be made on new elections (in January).
23.
CHANGING COURSES
- No student in Form 4 to Upper 6 may change courses without first
talking to their subject teacher or Head of Department and then seeing Mr
Hill, Mr Maclure or Mr. Simmons before any change can take place. Changes
must also be signed and authorised by parents.
24.
HOMEWORKS
- a homework timetable will apply to Forms 4 and 5 as will the rule of 3
missed or failed homeworks leading to detention. Form 4 and 5 students will
be issued with homework diaries which must be used and will be regularly
checked. 6th Form students must try to stick to deadlines set or
they too will be subject to sanctions, with detentions given to for missing
homeworks or handing in assignments late. Late work will also lead to poor
Greengates grades and may damage chances of getting into
college/university. 6th Form students may also lose their passes
and privileges, such as free periods, if behind with their work. ALL
students will be issued with HOMEWORK DIARIES – USE THEM AND GET ORGANISED!
Their use will be periodically checked in Forms 4 & 5.
NB:
Further information on deadlines and sanctions will follow.
25.
PLAGIARISM
– IGCSE/IB
students must properly REFERENCE all of their work and acknowledge all
sources.
This
includes work from fellow students, the Internet, books, magazines or any
other sources.
All
students must avoid: lending or copying work to/from other students;
using
all or part
of someone else's words, pictures,
charts, or ideas as their own without giving due credit;
submitting work from a class of previous year to a current class;
fabricating, inventing information or falsifying grades, research or other
findings; using or consulting unauthorized materials or using unauthorized
equipment or devices on tests, quizzes, assignments or examinations; lying,
cheating, or being deceitful about your academic work.
Please
refer to the school plagiarism policy for more details.
26.
We
expect COURTESY to be the rule in school - try to be polite to ALL
staff in school (teachers, office staff, library staff, tuck shop and
workers without exception) and to each other. Equally have respect for ALL
property whether it is yours or not. DO NOT leave your possessions lying
around. Hand in all valuables to PE staff before PE lessons, House Games,
afternoon activities etc.. Courtesy to teachers also means that if you have
a problem and you need to see the counsellor or Mr. Hill or Mr. Maclure, you
MUST inform your teacher FIRST and when you
return late to class you MUST have a NOTE from
the above showing the time you left their office.
27.
CAS
– 6th Form students who make a commitment to take part in
activities such as Porvenir, Special Olympics and Habitat have a
responsibility to turn out for such activities ON A REGULAR basis.
28.
EARLY
LEAVE
- Authorization must also be given for anyone to leave school early. THE
STUDENTS MUST have a note from parents - this will be authorized by
Mr. Hill. The student is expected to sign out in the book provided at the
front gate and show the signed note at the gate. Students who attempt to
leave school without proper authorisation WILL be suspended.
29.
HOUSE
SYSTEM
- ALL students are expected to support their Houses in all sports throughout
the year. Remember that colleges/universities like to see good all round
students who participate well in academic areas, in sports and other areas
such as school Drama, Orchestra or the CAS programme for the sixth form. A
PE profile on your records is now being kept to assist teachers in writing
up references/testimonials.
30.
IB
DEADLINES
– 6th Form students who fail to meet key IB deadlines can expect
to receive a low grade or fail grade which will affect Greengates TERM or
SEMESTER grades adversely. REMEMBER good Greengates grades are essential on
your transcript when applying to college/university (more details will be
given).
31.
Regulations concerning EVACUATION will be given separately but
remember: FOLLOW THE TEACHER’S INSTRUCTIONS AND MOVE QUICKLY AND QUIETLY TO
THE FIELD IN FRONT OF THE SENIOR BLOCK.
32.
LAPTOPS
– The use of personal laptops will continue to be restricted, partly because
of the limited access of users to the wireless system. Student permission to
use a personal laptop in school must come ONLY from JH or KH and will be
restricted now only to students with injuries where they have handwriting
problems or students with learning disabilities or where subject teachers
authorise this with JH for their lesson only.
33.
CYBER-BULLYING
– any student found to be sending ‘hate’ mail via the Internet (eg: facebook,
MSN etc) to another student can expect serious consequences such as
suspension from school or expulsion from school. Likewise, students posting
photos or videos taken in school on the Internet without authorisation will
also face serious consequences. Mrs. Sherry Dowlatshahi, the ICT
Coordinator, will be issuing a more detailed policy on Internet use and
abuse this term to all students and this will be a special subject to be
addressed in assemblies.
