A New Tradition Begins: Say Hello to George

A New Tradition Begins: Say Hello to George

November was an exciting month for the Greengates School Mexico community. After months of anticipation, students across all sections finally met George, our new campus mascot.

George is more than a mascot, he represents the strength, unity and shared spirit of our international school community in Mexico City.

During Wellbeing Week, as students took part in talks and activities promoting health, balance and emotional growth, our lovely lion made his very first appearance. At that stage, however, he didn’t yet have an official name.

Children from Year 2 to Year 6 took part in a creative challenge, guided by their teachers, brainstorming and proposing name ideas through thoughtful discussion and illustration.

The Student Board selected five finalists: Lionel, Whiskers, Henry Lionheart, Roary, and George. The final decision was made by our entire community through a vote on Instagram.

After a week of enthusiastic participation and more than 200 votes cast, George emerged as the winner with 87 votes.

Since his debut, George has been part of several special school moments. On World Children’s Day, he proudly wore a blue cape to match our students’ outfits, and he also joined the staff Christmas lunch, bringing festive cheer to the occasion, and the Christmas Concert.

Did you know?

In British culture, the lion has symbolised strength, courage and royalty for nearly 900 years. It appears on the Royal Coat of Arms, where three golden lions symbolise bravery, leadership and national pride.

Greengates School Mexico has embraced the lion as a symbol since almost 75 years ago. George now brings this emblem to life on campus, helping strengthen our shared identity and community spirit.
